“Writing is easy,” says Gene Fowler. “All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your head.”
Perhaps you’ve encountered his frustration.
Let’s say you’ve assembled all your materials. Whether it’s a business brochure, or that direct mail package or fundraising campaign that has been stressing you out, or a personal memoir you’ve been hiding in your desk drawer, you need someone with the time and expertise to bring your project to life.
Whether it’s a simple brush-up of your prose, a major rewrite, or the crafting of something new and magical from your notes, I’m your wordsmith.
Hearing Between the Lines
One way I like to work is to set up a conference with you over the phone, and really listen to you. I ask lots of questions, and take note not only of the specifics of the piece you want written, but of the subtleties as well. It is these nuances that often separate an adequate piece from something which has real impact.
It’s important to go beyond the simple mechanics of the written word, and instead listen carefully to what needs to be expressed and find creative ways to bring it out in the text. One client said I combine “the skill of a technician with the soul of a poet”—a good mix, I think.
As T.S. Eliot wrote,
The end is where we start from. And every phrase
And sentence that is right (where every word is at home,
Taking its place to support the others,
The word neither diffident nor ostentatious,
An easy commerce of the old and the new,
The common word exact without vulgarity,
The formal word precise but not pedantic,
The complete consort dancing together)
Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning. . . .
Beyond Generic Copy Writing
I specialize in technical jargon “translation”—making the dense and obtuse into something clear, lucid, and easily understandable to even a general audience; and inclusive language editing—changing sexist and offensive terminology into language that is non-sexist and reflective of society’s diversity, but without the stilted and harsh search-and-replace approach taken by others.
My expertise includes direct mail packages to market products and services, and fundraising packages for nonprofit organizations. We have a strong background in advertising and public relations materials of all sorts—corporate brochures, sales flyers, website content, product information sheets, and press kits, to name a few.
You may be surprised at how often you need a good writer. Whether you need articles for news or opinion outlets, fresh blog posts, content for web pages, product or organization brochures, product catalogs, advertising copy, or company newsletters and annual reports people will actually want to read, I’m your new copy writer.
Here are a few writing samples.
We Won’t Tell a Soul
A lot of people need ghostwriters, believe it or not. Are you ready to write your autobiography? A family memoir? Do you have a story to tell, but don’t know how to get started?
Maybe you’re a doctor who has discovered an amazing health breakthrough. You know everything about your subject, but your writing skills are a tad weak. You want someone to take your ideas, your research, and put it into words. The right words.
Or perhaps you’re an established writer and just need someone else to help “fill in” under your name. It’s done all the time.
I’ve ghostwritten books and articles for some famous folks. Unfortunately, if I told you who they are, I’d have to kill you. (No, seriously. You’d have to die. The author/ghostwriter relationship is a sacred and inviolable bond. No one will ever know you used a ghostwriter unless you decide to tell them.)
